Vladimir T. Ivashkin

Editor-in-Chief of the Russian Journal of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Coloproctology Vladimir T. Ivashkin was born on 24 March 1939. He graduated from the Tambov Suvorov military school in 1958 and from naval department of Leningrad Military Medical Academy in 1964. He served as a chief medical officer on a submarine until 1968, then in 1968 he entered postgraduate course in the Department of Hospital Internal Medicine of Leningrad Military Medical Academy. After finishing the course he worked as an instructor, senior instructor, and deputy head of the Department of Hospital Internal Medicine (1971–1986). 

During those years he successfully combined teaching, medicine and scientific research. In 1971 he defended a candidate thesis and a doctorate thesis in 1978. He received a degree of assistant professor in 1980 and full professor in 1984. 
From 1986 to 1988 Vladimir Trophimovich was the head of the Department of Hospital Internal Medicine of Leningrad Military Medical Academy. From 1988 to 1995 the major general of medical service V.T. Ivashkin was the Chief Internist of the Ministry of Defence of the USSR (later Russian Federation).
In 1991 he was elected associate member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, in 1997 – Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
From 1995 to present V.T. Ivashkin heads Department of Propedeutics of Internal Disease of the medical department and the Clinic of Propedeutics of Internal Disease, Gastroenterology and hepatology named after V.Kh. Vasilenko of University Clinical Hospital №2 I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University ).
He founded and is currently the president of the Russian Gastroenterological Association (1991) and the Russian Society for the Study of the Liver (1995).
V.T. Ivashkin founded and has since been the head of the National School of Gastroenterology, Hepatology. He is the founder of the Russian Journal of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Coloproctology – the first Russian journal dedicated to problems in gastroenterology.
V.T. Ivashkin is an author and co-author of monographs “Cyclic nucleotides and organisme adaptation” (1977), “Metabolic organization of stomach functions” (1981), “Regulation levels of metabolic activity of organs and tissues” (1987), “Theory of functional blocks and clinical medicine problems” (1990), “Therapeutical help to earthquake survivors” (1995), “Autoimmune liver diseases” (2001), “Diarrhea syndrome” (2000, 2003), “Clinical versions of metabolic syndrome” (2011), “Clinical signification of nitrogen oxide and heat shock proteins” (2011), “Cholestasis” (2012), “Reading over S.P. Botkin” (2012), “Clinical diagnostics” (2012), “Functional diseases of gastrointestinal tract” (2013), “Short introduction to gastroenterology” (2000), textbooks “Liver and bile ducts diseases” (2001), “Rational pharmacotherapy of digestive tract diseases” (2003, 2011), “Diagnostics and treatment of diffuse liver disease”, textbooks on propedeutics of internal disease that underwent numerous new editions. He taught and trained 45 doctors in medical science and 80 candidates in medical science.
V.T. Ivashkin is a laureate of the Russian Government Award in Science and Technology for development of diagnostics and treatment of disease associated with Helicobacter pylori. In 2013 he became a laureate of the Russian Government Award in Edication for development of innovative internet-education methods. In 1993 he was awarded a title of Honored Man of Science of Russian Federation. He was awarded the Order for Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR, 3rd class (1989), Order of Friendship (2008).
